Mayor Edward Jones joined the national dialogue on the health of African Americans during a national colloquium hosted by the National Medical Association. The colloquium, held March 9-12 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, focused on policy issues, access to care, chronic disease management, violence, opioid/substance use disorders, increased participation in clinical trials, and putting prevention into practice.
Mayor Jones was a panelist during the discussion that specifically addressed the topic, “Policy Panel A: The State and Local Perspective.” The general theme of the colloquium is “The Urgency of Now: Creating a Culture of Health Equity.”
Other panelists pictured include Daniel Dawes, executive director, Health Policy and External Affairs, Morehouse School of Medicine; Indiana State Representative Gregory Porter, President of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators; Johnny Ford, former mayor of Tuskegee, Alabama, and member of the World Conference of Mayors; and Baltimore, Maryland, Mayor Catherine Pugh.

Dr. Ruby Higgins, former Grambling State University Vice President of Student Affairs ,former secretary of the GUNAA, and current
President of the Grambling Alumni Chapter suffered the loss of her house and all of the
family’s belongings to a Fire on Wednesday, February 14th. Her mother Hazel Douglas, her son Raynald, grandchildren Roman and Reagan also lived there and suffered great losses as well. Dr. Higgins is recuperating.
